2010 Hunger Study Results

In 2009, the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York participated in a national study of the charitable response to domestic hunger in conjunction with Feeding America, the nation’s food bank network. The study is called Hunger in America 2010 and is based on face-to-face interviews with more than 62,000 clients nationwide, as well as completed questionnaires from more than 37,000 agencies. The Regional Food Bank conducted 352 client interviews and received 467 surveys from its member agencies.

Locally, the report demonstrates a staggering increase in demand for emergency food assistance since 2006.

Barn Raising For The Patroon Land Farm

The Food Bank has enlisted the support of Eastern Contractors for the construction of a barn at the Patroon Land Farm.  We are now working to raise funds for the purchase of materials for the project.

The barn would provide shelter for vital farm operations such as washing, sorting, packing and staging produce, repairing and maintaining equipment and storing machine parts, produce containers and farm supplies.  It would also permit us to work inside, host volunteers, and school and other community groups during inclement weather.

Siena Mens Basketball Team Visits The Food Bank

On January 5, members of the Siena men’s basketball team lent a hand in the warehouse of the Regional Food Bank.

The warehouse visit coincided with a successful Food Drive held during the Saint’s recent game with Mount St. Mary’s.  Over 755 pounds of food was collected furing the Food Drive and an additional $750 through raffle donations.

“We take the opportunity we have to help out in the community very seriously,“ Head Men’s Basketball Coach Fran McCaffery said. “Siena is a special place where the Franciscan values really mean something and we are thankful for the chance to help in any way we can.“

Hunger Strikes

image

“Nancy Rockwell adds yet another name to her spiral-bound notebook as volunteers scramble in the back, pulling cans of vegetables and boxes of pasta off shelves and sorting them into bags.

It’s Thursday, one of the busiest days at Doors for Hope, a thrift shop and food pantry in West Sand Lake that’s changed names in recent years but has helped feed its Rensselaer County neighbors for nearly four decades. Today, they pack bags of food for a man who’s new to the pantry and waits quietly in the background.

He and his family of five were homeless until last week. Someone had to give him a ride in.

Like many of the area’s food pantries—as the recession drags on and the unemployment rate sits at a startling 10 percent—the need is greater than ever.“ (Times Union)
